Microporous rubber gaskets (SPONGE)

Microporous “sponge” gaskets are sealing materials with a foam, sponge-like structure, i.e. with many small air cavities inside. This type of structure gives them completely different properties than compact (solid) rubbers.

Main features of microporous (sponge) seals:

Low density – are light and soft.
Excellent compressibility – easy to squeeze and return to their original shape when released.
Good sealing at low pressures – Suitable where high tightening force cannot be used.
Insulating properties – Thermal and acoustic insulation is often better than compact rubber.
Resistance by material – can be EPDM, silicone, neoprene, NR, etc.; properties depend on the rubber itself.

They are produced either:

by chemical foaming during vulcanisation (a blowing agent is added to the mixture),
mechanical foamingwhere gas is introduced into the polymer during mixing.

The result is a structure similar to sponge – from fine microcells to coarser pores, depending on the type of product.

What are actually microporous (SPONGE) seals ?

Description

EPDM-microporous rubber profiles are mainly used as seals for switchboards, light fittings, windows, air-conditioning, cable expansion inserts, in structural constructions (against resonance, vibrations), in floor expansion, in the automotive industry, but also in other areas of industry.

Properties

They are characterized by reliability and good physical-mechanical properties under normal weather conditions at operating temperatures of -40 °C to +70 °C.

Material basis

They are manufactured using a rubber EPDM compound (EPDM+SBR or pure EPDM) with a specific gravity of 0.3 to 0.8 g/cm3 and a hardness generally around 20-40 °ShA. In addition to standard materials for various demanding applications, we can also produce peroxide compounds (sulphur-free), flame retardant profiles in accordance with (NF F 16-101, ISO 45545), products in accordance with TL1010 and FMVSS 302, waterproofing materials in accordance with EN681, seals for flood walls, automotive seals in accordance with VW 2.8.1

Versions

They are manufactured in several basic shapes, either as square, rectangle, circular gasket, intermediate ring and various special cavity or reed gaskets. The seals can also be manufactured as self-adhesive.
